The 5am Club by Robin S. Sharma

This is a story which starts with an artist and an entrepreneur going to an improvement seminar.  They get speaking to a man who appears like a vagrant who has lots of wisdom and predictably turns out to be one of the worlds richest men.  Afterwards the three of them travel to various countries, includes lots of profound sayings.

The 5 AM club title relates to ‘empire makers creators’ who take one hour for themselves before dawn to prepare themselves for a world-class day. Suggests 20 minutes of exercise, 20 minutes of meditation, then 20 minutes of time dedicated to self-improvement.

Think about what those we most love will say about us when we’re gone. This help us make a giant shift: from seeking legitimacy in society to constructing a meaningful legacy.

Aim to become a virtuoso. A standout. An exceptionalist.

The Top 5% of achievers are a lot less concerned with fame, cash and approval.  Instead they are more invested in punching above their weight class within their craft, playing above their pay grade.  This allows them to serve millions and then potentially make millions.

Always bring your best self forward.  Anyone can become an everyday leader by showing up when it’s easy but especially when it’s difficult. If you do so, a guaranteed victory is waiting for you in the future.

An addiction to distraction is the end of your creative production, this book is very anti- social media and mindless web surfing.

Several Rules

Excuses breed no genius.

Remember that small daily improvements, when done consistently over time, lead to stunning results.

All change is hard at first, messy in the middle and gorgeous at the end. Everything you now find easy you first found difficult.

To achieve the best results you must start doing what 95% of people are unwilling to do.

Be aware as you start to live like this, the majority will call you crazy, suggests being labelled a freak is the price of greatness.

When you feel like surrendering, continue as triumph loves the relentless!

Suggests majority of people don’t proactively change to improve themselves and really tries to say that getting up at 5 am allows some improvement time making you more exceptional.

States the majority of people on the planet today really are trapped in superficiality in vague, imprecise thinking which leads to vague imprecise results. It is rare to meet someone at a store or in a restaurant who is fully present, astoundingly polite, unusually knowledgeable, full of enthusiasm, incredibly hard-working, intensely imaginative, noticeably inventive and great at what they do.  Therefore optimise daily.

Tiny, daily wins and iterations stack and lead to outcomes of excellence, over the long-term. Book suggests few people have the patience to endure the long game.

Suggests there are too many distractions, simplify things focus on few projects or people.

Remember your past is a place to be learned from, not a home to be lived in.

Often, a bad example teaches us more about who we wish to become than a good one could ever provide.

Five truths about habits

Truth #1: World-class willpower isn’t an inborn strength, but a skill developed through relentless practice. Getting up at dawn is perfect self-control training.

Truth #2: Personal discipline is a muscle. The more you stretch it, the stronger it grows.

Truth #3: Like other muscles, willpower weakens when tired. Recovery is, therefore, absolutely necessary for the expression of mastery. And to manage decision fatigue.

Truth #4: Installing any great habit successfully follows a pattern for automation of the routine.

Truth #5: Increasing self-control in one area of your life elevates self-control in all areas of your life.

These reasons are why it suggests joining the 5 am Club is a game changing habit that helps you.

 3 Values of Heroic Habit-Makers

Value #1: Victory demands consistency and persistency.

Value #2: Following through on what is started determines the size of the personal respect that will be generated.

Value #3: The way you practice in private is precisely the way you’ll perform once you’re in public.

In general you only have a certain amount of cognitive bandwidth, therefore rule out distractions and focus on important tasks
