I will, I won’t & I want.  That is all you need to know about willpower, goal setting is also useful. Nicely written touches upon evidence behind willpower often citing studies of a few hundred typically overweight Americans. Example of using mindfulness to overcome addiction, learn to accept the craving and let it pass rather than trying to suppress it.  Such as the instruction don’t think of white bears or blue elephants, harder to suppress. Thinking about your future self can change how much you save.
